CEA to educate LG candidates on environmental pollution |

The Central Environment Authority has taken steps to educate candidates contesting the forthcoming local government elections and the public on environmental pollution caused by election campaigns where a large amount of non-biodegradable materials is used. CEA Chairman Charitha Herath told The Island yesterday that enormous amounts of foreign aid, from institutions like the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and International Monetary Fund had been utilised for road development in the country, on long-term loan basis. Private buses for elections |

Over one housand private buses will be deployed for the election purposes for the upcoming local government elections, the Lanka Private Bus Owners Association said yesterday.
The associations President, Gemunu Wijeyratne said the Elections Department had requested for buses for the upcoming March 17 elections. He said that the buses will be supplied to all 25 districts for the local government elections. (Read More)

DNA member Jayantha Ketagoda’s name is to be gazetted as the replacement for the parliament seat made vacant after DNA leader Sarath Fonseka’s imprisonment, Additional Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said yesterday
Earlier Lakshman Nipunarachchi’s name was put forward as the replacement for Sarath Fonseka but he declined to take oaths as he believed the seat rightfully belonged to the DNA leader Sarath Fonseka. (Read More)

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress yesterday filed petitions against the rejection of its nominations tendered for four Local Government bodies. Nominations forwarded by Sri Lanka Muslim Congress for the Local Government Elections had been rejected for the Nuwaragam Palath Pradeshiya Sabha in the Anuradhapura District, the Mawathagama Pradeshiya Sabha in the Kurunegala District, the Minuwangoda Pradeshiya Sabha and Attanagalla Pradeshiya Sabha in the Gampaha District. The leading candidates of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) who are contesting the forth coming local government election will be starting their campaign from February 7 in the Northern Province.

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has nominated 829 candidates to contest under its own Banner and the Tree symbol, while 41 will contest on the UPFA ticket.

CaFFE, as an experienced leading election monitoring body identifies the present election where thousands of candidates compete with each other as a fertile ground for election law violations. In the last elections we saw a large increase of election law violations and violence due to intra party rivalry, it says in a statement.

Parties consider legal action as Returning Officers reject 450 nominations |

Several political parties are seeking legal advice to challenge in Courts the rejection of their nomination papers.
Among the parties affected by Returning Officers’ decision are the ruling UPFA, the UNP, theJVP, the TNA, the EPDP, the SLMC, the UPF and the NSSP.
A majority of the 25 Chief Returning Officers rejected 450 nominations for the March 17 elections to 301 local bodies.
Elections Secretariat advisor Bandula Kulatunga said yesterday that 2,047 nominations had been received between Jan. 20 and 12 noon on Jan. 27. (Read More)

The SLMC is contesting 24 Municipal, Urban and Village Councils,under its tree symbol, while it has teamed up with the government in eleven other Councils.
SLMC General Secretary Hasssn Ali told The Island last night that their nominations lists for the Ukkuwela Pradeshiya Sabha, Minwangoda Muncipal Council, Attanagalla Pradeshiya Sabha and Akurana Pradeshiya Sabha,had been rejected on technical grounds.
"Right now, I can confirm that we will be contesting 24 Municipal, Urban and Village Councils on our own and eleven other local authorities with the government. The final positon will be known only after all our organisers’ reports are received." (Read More)
