The SLMC is contesting 24 Municipal, Urban and Village Councils,under its tree symbol, while it has teamed up with the government in eleven other Councils.
SLMC General Secretary Hasssn Ali told The Island last night that their nominations lists for the Ukkuwela Pradeshiya Sabha, Minwangoda Muncipal Council, Attanagalla Pradeshiya Sabha and Akurana Pradeshiya Sabha,had been rejected on technical grounds.
"Right now, I can confirm that we will be contesting 24 Municipal, Urban and Village Councils on our own and eleven other local authorities with the government. The final positon will be known only after all our organisers’ reports are received." (Read More)

Two leading election monitoring bodies – the PAFFREL and CaFFE expressed fears over potential environment pollution by over 30,000 candidates contesting the 301 local government bodies during their election campaign, saying more than 10,000 election observers would be advised to direct their attention on maintaining a clean environment. PAFFREL Chief Rohana Hettiaarachchi said his organization would deploy some 5,000 election observers with special emphasis on the protection of environment. (Read More)

EPDP leader Douglas Devananda vowed yesterday that he would take legal action against the elections authorities for rejecting the nomination papers filed by him for the local bodies in Jaffna District.
The EPDP had tried to field candidates to all these local bodies under the betel leaf symbol of the UPFA.
Mr. Devananda said that the nomination papers had been rejected because of an error in the Tamil translation of the title ‘UPFA’. (Read More)

Three major political parties expressed confidence yesterday of winning the forthcoming Local Government elections.
The ruling UPFA expressed confidence that it would achieve a resounding victory at the elections.
The party said it would emerge victorious with the kind of support the party was getting from its allies. The UPFA had the support of more than 20 political parties according to SLFP General Secretary Maithirpala Sirisena. (Read More)

The ruling UPFA’s bid to consolidate its political power at grassroots in the Jaffna peninsula and Kilinochchi suffered a major setback yesterday (27) when nomination papers for all 16 local bodies in the Jaffna peninsula and three local bodies in Kilinochchi were rejected by the Jaffna Elections Secretariat.
UPFA nomination papers for the Nuwara-Eliya Pradeshiya Sabha and Lindula-Talawakele Urban council were also rejected.
UPFA constituent the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) fielded candidates for the Nuwara-Eliya and Lindula-Talawakele local bodies on the UPFA ticket. (Read More)

Massive election propaganda campaigns have begun in 44 Local Government bodies around the country even before elections laws come into action today. Campaign for Free and Fair Election (CaFFE) stresses the importance of unbiased implementation of election laws to create a level playing field which is a fundamental necessity in having a free and fair election and to minimize election law violations. . CaFFE observers that the unprecedented level of election campaign already in Colombo, Gampaha, Galle, Matara, Kurunegala, Puttalam and Rathnapura Districts could lead to discrepancies, with regard to election law violations, since there seem to be massive campaigning even before the deadline for nominations have end. DNA member Jayantha Ketagoda would be likely to take oaths as MP if its leader Sarath Fonseka lost his parliamentary seat in terms of the Court of Appeal, political sources said yesterday. Former Army Commander and DNA leader Sarath Fonseka stand to lose his parliamentary seat in terms of the Court Martial ruling that jailed him for two years, after the Supreme Court interpretation that the Court Martial was Constitutional, political sources said yesterday.

LG nominations close today |

Accepting of nominations for the forthcoming local government polls will be concluded at 12.00 noon today.
Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayaka will announce the date for elections after the conclusion of accepting the nominations by returning officers of the 25 districts. However, government has already said that the elections would be held on March 12.
The government dissolved 301 out of 343 local government bodies on January 6th almost one year after President Mahinda Rajapaksa postponed the elections for local government bodies which was scheduled for 2009 as the Election Secretariat was busy with conducting Presidential and General elections in 2009. Two Tamil political parties have decided to contest the local government elections under Left Front, political sources say.
All Lanka Tamil Congress led by former Jaffna district MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam and Tamil National Liberation Front led by former Jaffna district MP M.K. Sivajilingam will contest under the Left Front.
Sivajilingam's party has reportedly failed to get the recognition from the Election Commissioner. (Read More)

Nominations for the forthcoming local government polls had been tendered for 11 Pradeshya Sabhas by yesterday by the JVP, Jana Setha Peramuna and one independent group, a spokesman of the Elections Secretariat said. The General Secretary of the JVP Tilvin Silva had tendered nominations for Elahara, Hingurakkgoda, Medirigiriya, Lankapura, Dimbulagala, Welikanda, Tamankaduwa Pradeshiya Sabas and the Janasetha Peramuna for Homagama and Kesbawa Pradeshiya Sabas.
