Sri Lanka's Department of Registration of Persons will soon commence issuing new electronic National Identity Cards (e-NICs) for all citizens.

The new IDs incorporating a sophisticated devise required for the current and future needs of national security will be issued through the Department of Registration of Persons.

Commissioner General of Registration of Persons R.M.S Sarathkumara has told the state-run radio that the Department will set up 331 special units in divisional secretariats to issue 15 million new e-NIC cards soon.

The Executive Committee of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) Friday unanimously adopted a resolution stating that former Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake had been `subjected to absolutely unnecessary harassment and humiliation` at the office of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and corruption.

The resolution stated that on April 1 the former Chief Justice was directed to appear before the Commission on May 17 to record her statement and raise her objections, if any, on the constitution of the Commission.

Ousted Chief Justice Shirani Banadaranayake who appeared before the Commission Investigating Allegations of Bribery Commission yesterday raised objections to the presence of Chairman Justice Balapatabendi and member Jayantha Wickeramaratne.

 She asked that they disqualified from participating in the proceedings against her.

Filing her objections, she said that former Chief Justice Asoka De Silva had purchased an apartment at the Trillium condominium when the Ceylinco case was ongoing and his personal relationship with Justice Balapatabendi was a reason for the bias.

DNA Parliamentarian Arjuna Ranatunga says that Sri Lanka cricket is facing a situation where they can no longer maintain three stadiums built by them built at a large cost.

Democratic National Alliance Parliamentarian, Anura Kumara Dissanayake raised a question in Parliament regarding the granting of broadcasting rights of international sports events to private networks in addition to state television companies.

The MP who pointed out that the Minister of Sports was not present in the chambers to respond to the question, emphasised that this was the fourth time that the relevant question was raised in Parliament.

A draft proposal to address Tamil issues is to be formulated by a three member Tamil political party committee, it was decided at a meeting between Tamil political parties held in Mannar.

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) attended the meeting together with civil society representatives.

At that meting it was decided that a three member committee will  be appointed to formulate a draft proposal to address some of the Tamil concerns.

Former LTTE arms procurer Kumaran Pathmanathan also known as KP said that reducing the army presence in the war-hit areas in the country and introducing civil administration would help improve the living conditions of the people there.

“The army’s presence enhances safety at one level, but also intimidates people,” he told the Hindu newspaper in an interview.

He also said that in the 1970s, Tamil politicians brainwashed youngsters like him into joining the Tamil cause, he says the recent student protests in Tamil Nadu brought back those memories.
