LG Polls: JVP goes solo with the Bell |

The JVP, which contested the last General Election under the Democratic National Alliance symbol, has decided to go solo and contest under its Bell symbol at the upcoming Local Government Election.
Party Leader Somawansa Amarasinghe told a news conference yesterday that they decided to contest alone as the Local Government Election was different as there was no national politics involved and it could not topple a government. (Read More)

The JVP is likely to go it alone at the forthcoming Local Government elections, according to well informed party sources. The JVP Central Committee, which met last night, decided to contest the mini polls in March under its own symbol, the Bell. The JVP would officially announce its decision today at a press conference scheduled to be held at Party head office in Battaramulla, sources said. Asserting that the proposed Local Authorities Electoral Reforms Bill was a draconian piece of legislation, DNA Parliamentary Group Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake told parliament yesterday that his party was happy about the government’s decision to postpone the passage of the Bill.
He thanked the government for deciding to merely debate the Bill in the House yesterday without passing it.
However, the DNA MP said, no member of the government was properly aware of the proposed Bill. “Even the subject minister is not aware of it though he presented it in the House,” he said. Read More

The Court of Appeal yesterday issued notice, returnable on December 17, 2010, on the present Army Commander, the members of the court martial I and the Judge Advocate. The members of the Tribunal I are Major General Weeratunga, Wijetunga, and Jayatillake. The Judge Advocate Shavindra Fernando and the Attorney General were also among the respondents who were noticed. Romesh de Silva PC at the outset told the Court of Appeal, that his client, General Sarath Fonseka, retired from the Army on November 14, 2009 and thereafter he ceased to be governed by the Military Law. The court martial I had no jurisdiction to conduct proceedings against Fonseka, convict, cashier and remove him from rank, and disqualify his medals of merit. (Read More)

The Democratic National Alliance (DNA) has sacked the Nava Sihala Urumaya from the Alliance. The DNA executive committee decided to sack the Nava Sihala Urumaya and its leader Sarath Manamendra. DNA Chairman Tiran Alles and executive committee member Jayantha Ketagoda have said that Manamendra had on several occasions informed them that he wanted to leave the DNA and join either the government or the UNP in order to resolve some financial issues faced by him. The JVP yesterday lashed out at the Budget 2011 claiming that its compilation had been based on the old Cabinet of ministers. JVP Parliamentary Group Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake told a press conference, at the party head office in Battaramulla, that according to the Budget proposals presented by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on November 22, no funds were allocated for 19 ministries. He said the budget was prepared before the appointing of ministers. "The government will have to present amendments to the budget and this would be the first budget with the most amendments," Dissanayake said adding the government increased the number of ministries, but did not give anything to the people. Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka’s wife Anoma and several supporters dashed coconuts after participating in a pooja at the Weera Kali Amman Kovil in Kochchikade yesterday seeking justice for retired General Fonseka and for the restoration of democracy in Sri Lanka. “Festivities are of little or no use when there is anarchy in the country and a day such as yesterday when the president is having his swearing-in ceremony for a second term is the most suitable day to seek divine help to restore democracy here,” she told journalists after participating in religious observances.(Read More)
