Don’t fall into govt. trap, JVP warns UNP

The JVP would take legal action in the Supreme Court if rejected UPFA and UNP nomination lists for local government election were accepted in Akmemana, Akuressa, Moneragala, JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake said. The party also called on the main opposition UNP to withdraw the cases it had filed against the rejection of its nominations as a responsible opposition party without falling into government’s trap.

JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake told a news conference yesterday that the party would be compelled to take up the matter in Supreme Court  if the rejections of nomination papers were cancelled. (Read More)
   
Vote us or suffer

“Either you vote us or suffer” is the new motto of Sri Lanka’s ruling UPFA party’s local Government election campaign. President Mahinda Rajapakse’s lieutenant Wimal Weerawansa told the voters that they will be left with a local Government that can enjoy riding a heavy vehicle round the village if the opposition is given power in their local government.

Another said that the Government will appoint their own commissioners to go against the local Government body elected by the people. This is perhaps the most direct threat that the Government would go against the will of the voters. (Read More)

   
Less apply for postal voting

A total of 321,000 persons had applied for postal voting at the forthcoming local government elections, a spokesman for Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) said.

He said the number was much less than earlier elections, probably due to the fact that local government elections in certain parts of the country had been postponed due to the forthcoming World Cup cricket matches that commence on Saturday.
   
Govt. tries to sabotage JVP rallies - Herath

The JVP alleges that the ruling party does not allow them to hold LG polls rallies and therefore it is at a disadvantage in the race.

JVP Propaganda Secretary Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath told the media yesterday at the party head office in Pelawatte that whenever his party sought permission to hold election rallies in public places government authorities promptly tuned down its request claiming that they could not be used for political purposes.(Read More)
   
FR petition postponed again

The Supreme Court yesterday (10) postponed again   for support on April 24 the fundamental rights petition filed by members of the Democratic National Alliance who impugned the alleged unjustifiable dispersal/disruption of their protest campaign in Galle and subsequently their arrest and detention.

The Bench comprised Justices N.G. Amaratunga, Saleem Marsoof and K. Sripavan.

Petitioners are Parliamentarians Vijitha Herath, Ajith Kumara, Arjuna Ranatunga and Asela Nalinda Lal, Nandana Senarath and Dilip Kumara. (Read More)


   
CEA to educate LG candidates on environmental pollution

The Central Environment Authority has taken steps to educate candidates contesting the forthcoming local government elections and the public on environmental pollution caused by election campaigns where a large amount of non-biodegradable materials is used.

CEA Chairman Charitha Herath told The Island yesterday that enormous amounts of foreign aid, from institutions like the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and International Monetary Fund had been utilised for road development in the country, on long-term loan basis. (Read More)

The ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) yesterday filed a Writ Petition before the Court of Appeal challenging the rejection of its nomination papers for the Akmeemana Pradeshiya Sabha for the forthcoming local authorities elections.

JVP LG polls campaign :‘SF issue’ dropped, UNP targeted over leadership tussle

The JVPis planning to cash in on public anger which, it believes, will be directed against the government over the spiralling cost of living etc. The JVP says people will realise that the UNP, embroiled in a leadership struggle today, is not interested in the welfare of the people.

The JVP has left out the ‘SF issue’ in its main propaganda leaflet for the LG polls campaign released on Feb. 1. It is devoted to a scathing attack on the government over waste, corruption, irregularities and the ruling party’s indifference to aggravating economic woes of the the public. fertile ground for election law violations

CaFFE, as an experienced leading election monitoring body identifies the present election where thousands of candidates compete with each other as a fertile ground for election law violations. In the last elections we saw a large increase of election law violations and violence due to intra party rivalry, it says in a statement.

Parties consider legal action as Returning Officers reject 450 nominations

Several political parties are seeking legal advice to challenge in Courts the rejection of their nomination papers.

Among the parties affected by Returning Officers’ decision are the ruling UPFA, the UNP, theJVP, the TNA, the EPDP, the SLMC, the UPF and the NSSP.

A majority of the 25 Chief Returning Officers rejected 450 nominations for the March 17 elections to 301 local bodies.

Elections Secretariat advisor Bandula Kulatunga said yesterday that 2,047 nominations had been received between Jan. 20 and 12 noon on Jan. 27. (Read More)
