The JVP has lost the Tissamaharama Pradeshiya Sabha, which was previously held by them. The UPFA has obtained the power of the PS with 14,523 votes with seven seats, while the UNP received 8,344 votes with three seats. The JVP has received 7,767 votes with only two seats. So far the JVP has not able to win any council.

The JVP yesterday said that they were confident of winning the Tissamaharama Pradeshiya Sabha at the March 17 LG polls. They said that the government could not prevent the JVP from regaining the PS in spite of the UPFA carrying out a violent campaign targeting them.
Addressing the media, at JVP head office in Battaramulla, Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath alleged that there was absolutely no truth in President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s claim that the JVP was trying to involve the student community in politics. Herath accused the UPFA of deceiving the electorate due to the rapidly dwindling popularity of the ruling coalition. (Read More)

Local government polls to 234 out of a total of 335 local government bodies take place today at 7,402 polling stations to elect 3,036 candidates. Deputy Elections Commissioner W.P.Sumanasiri said 9,444,455 voters were eligible to cast their votes today to elect their representatives for three Municipal Councils, 30 Urban Councils and 201 Pradeshiya Sabhas. Polling starts at 7am and closes at 4pm. The number of members to be elected is 3,022 from among 29,098 candidates representing 28 political parties and about 420 independent groups. The postal voting was held last week on the 8th and 9th March. (Read More)

The JVP said yesterday that it feared mass scale election malpractices and violence in the Tissamaharama in Hamabantota District on polling day, and requested the authorities to make special security arrangements to avert any untoward incident.
The JVP charged that a certain Colombo District politician had gone to the area with a gang of thugs apparently to intimidate voters on polling day.Tissamaharama is the only local government body controlled by the JVP consecutively for two terms, and considered a stronghold of the party. Election monitors expect a low turnout when nearly ten million Sri Lankans go to the polls on Thursday (March 17) to elect representatives to 235 local government bodies. As the low-key polls campaign draws to a close midnight tomorrow, the ruling UPFA remains confident it will retain the majority of seats in the local bodies, while opposition parties are hopeful of making gains too.
The Elections Department has announced that election propaganda activities should cease by 12 midnight Monday and party election offices closed by Wednesday. (Read More)

The JVP yesterday claimed that Sri Lanka had two sets of laws - one for the Kelaniya area and the other which is the normal law for the rest of the country.
Addressing a meeting in Chilaw, JVP Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath said a person had ordered not to sell some kinds of vegetables within the Kelaniya area.(Read More)

Sri Lanka's Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today said the government has failed to improve the living standards of the conflict-affected people in the North.
JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva told a press conference that the government has not addressed the issues faced by these people.
He said that no practical measures have been taken to address the immediate issues faced by the people in the former war torn areas.
He observed that 22 months after the war has ended the people in the North still lacked basic facilities.
Silva also asked the government to handover to its original owners 1,202 houses that were acquired during the war in the North.(Read More)

Some members of the gang that attacked Sirasa TV last year are contesting the March 17 local government election in the Kelaniya area, DNA MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake charged in Parliament yesterday.
Mr. Dissanayake, making remarks during the debate on the state of emergency, Sirasa TV showed video clips of those gangsters at that time, yet the government failed to bring any of them to book.
Today, we can see the posters of some of these gang members. They are contesting the election in Kelaniya. This is the kind of government we have, he said. (Read More)

Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) is reminded of the idiom running with the hare and hunting with the hounds at the Department of Elections’ decision to postpone elections of 60 local government bodies.
The decision taken by the Department is a violation of article 262 of the Local Government Elections Act and CaFFE is surprised at this because in the past elections were not postponed just because a political party/independent group filed a court case about an election related matter. (Read More)

The UNP and the JVP are expected to register their protest with Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dissanayake, when he meets political party representatives today (22) at the Elections Secretariat, against the postponement of elections to 60 local government bodies. UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said his party would protest against the Elections Commissioner’s decision to postpone polls to 20 local bodies in Jaffna and Kilinochi simply because the UPFA had challenged the rejection of its nomination lists.
