WILL TAMILS BOYCOTT THE ELECTION THIS TIME AS WELL?
  2009-12-12

With the Presidential election campaign heightening, main issues affecting the ordinary people are being increasingly replaced by allegations, invectives and insults against each other by political party leaders. The questions why elections should be held and on what grounds people should elect their representative have been totally put in the back burner, giving an impression that anybody who has the financial power can contest any election. There are posters, banners and also huge cut-outs of politicians springing all over the country speaking of everything except for the basic problems of the people. Talk shows are telecast in almost all TV channels even past midnight everyday participated by those who are just witty, but not knowledgeable on issues that affect the ordinary people. Against this backdrop the argument put to fore by the leftist candidate Siritunge Jayasuriya, is quite acceptable, in spite of the position he is going to gain at the election being quite clear.

ABOLISH PREFERENTIAL VOTING SYSTEM NOT EXECUTIVE PRESIDENCY
  2009-12-11

The slogan of abolishing the executive presidency has hit the news headlines again. For that purpose a common candidate is contesting for the upcoming presidential elections. The concept of a common candidate is however not relevant to the presidential election system in Sri Lanka.

The presidential election is conducted under a preferential voting system. The voter can mark three preferences as 1, 2, & 3 in the ballot paper according to his/her wish. The candidate, if any, who receives more than one-half of the first preference, is declared elected as President.  Where no candidate has received more than one-half of the first preference, candidates who received the highest and second highest number of such votes will stay in the competition and other candidates will be eliminated from the competition.
